In 1492, in the first voyage to the new world, Christopher Columbus sailed to the waters filled with seaweed, fish, turtles, and crabs. Tame marine life that he observed and the number of birds around the lake convince the traveler that he was near land.
Columbus appeared to be disappointed. They are still many weeks before meet the land: Columbus has sailed through the Sargasso Sea. "Sea" is actually more accurately referred to as the sea currents as revolve or at least point vortex center. Sargasso Sea was formed by water flow system similar ring that rotates clockwise in the Atlantic Ocean from the West Indies to the Canary Islands. Part of the ring in calm that many islands seaweed that float, called sargassum, a place of shelter diverse wild life.
